Hi, This is procomputer tech. This is my first post on the iWindowsTech website. I will post on here occasionally relating to anything that this website talks about. Weather that’s cell phones, or internet, or computers or anything in this nature. I will probably post on here about once a week. Currently I am working on getting my Net+ and A+ certifications. So, lets hope all goes well with that.

The increasing popularity of smartphone devices will see the worldwide consumer mobile applications market increase in value to $52 billion (£32.8 billion) by 2016, according to new research.
A report from Juniper Research found that the rapid uptake of devices such as Apple’s iPhone and smartphone devices manufactured by companies such as HTC and Samsung will feed a rapid increase in the demand for mobile apps. The take-up of tablet computers will also help to drive app sales forward, according to the report.
The development and rollout of operator billing systems across leading app stores such as the Android Market and Ovi Store had led to a dramatic rise in revenues, as has the mass deployment of in-app billing. The latter has meant that for many publishers, post-download revenues have surpassed those of PPD (Pay-Per-Download). In other words purchases made after an app has been downloaded have generated more revenue than the initial download.
Although Juniper forecast that smartphones will continue to account for the lion’s share of app revenues over the next five years, tablet computers are expected to gain ground. The report predicted that tablet downloads will account for 25% of all app purchases made by 2016, up from just 7% now.
The study noted that the app store model’s dominance is likely to be challenged in the longer term as HTML5 – a new mark-up language which reduces end-user dependence on plug-in app technologies – facilitates the transition to a browser-based environment. In addition, the closer integration between web-based apps and handsets should mean that the advantage that native apps have is reduced, according to the study. Although HTML 5 is still under development, certain web browsers can already read the improved mark-up language.
Dr Windsor Holden, author of the report, said: “While we are likely to see some larger media publishers – particularly those dependent on subscription revenues – migrating to a direct-to-consumer model (D2C), this is by no means true for the majority of companies. Most do not possess the scale of traffic to make D2C a viable option: in most cases, the storefront will continue to be the optimal discovery and distribution mechanism.”
The study also found that most network operator storefronts will struggle to attract developers due to lack of scale going forward, and that more than 31 billion apps were downloaded to mobile devices in 2011.

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.
When it comes to the technological world, there is a constant war as to what is right and what is wrong. Governments around the world question it’s abilities and soon its limitations. Yet, as time goes on we may lose all of the wonderful content we have within the Internet. It may all be due to this bill. SOPA. SOPA is loosely written bill that could change the way we get our Internet research, entertainment, emails, and so much more. This bills loosely written language allows businesses around the world to have the ability to shut down websites, sue individuals, and so much more simply if someone is so much as singing lyrics to a song as a cover. We need to reserve the rights of the Internet to the people. With over 3,000,000 people protesting so far we have caused 35 senators to vote no on SOPA. To give you an idea as to how amazing this is in terms of progressive achievements, last week only 5 senators had voted no on SOPA. Email your senators, call your representatives, sign petitions online. You can make a difference. Save the Internet and become a part of history in the making.

Samsung began 2011 with the launch of a widely popular smartphone, the S2. It is finished with a second, the Galaxy Nexus. The releases have boosted the Korean manufacturer’s sales figures which they say have reached 300 million around the world.
The Galaxy S2 was launched in April and rapidly became touted as the best smartphone of the year boasting a dual core processor and 8 megapixel camera. Samsung said Galaxy S2 contracts reached 10 million sales faster than any of its other devices and its predecessor the Galaxy S notched up around 20 million sales. The Nexus launched in November in the UK and expectation is high for it to perform well, principally because it is the first device to run the latest version of Google operating system, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
With a screen size of 4.65 inches the Nexus is larger than its predecessors. Screen resolution is an impressive 1280×720 pixel meaning pictures are clear and sharp. It has a powerful 1.2GHz dual core processor and internal storage of 16 GB or 32GB. Yet it is the presence of Android 4.0 that has garnered the most amount of headlines. Samsung’s S2 provided a real boost for Android in 2011 and the device’s popularity is largely seen as a pivotal moment in the platforms ability to take on Apple. In the third quarter sales of Android overtook that of the California giant. Samsung has remained at the top of the list of most sold devices in the UK, even after the launch of the iPhone 4S, although this was caused by a failure by Apple to keep up with demand over supply.
No sales figures for the Nexus alone have been released by Samsung as yet. Once they are made available at the end of the year it is likely they will reflect another major boost in sales. This will likely soar again in 2012 with the rumoured release of the S3.
Bookending 2011 with two headline grabbing devices has made this a successful year for Samsung. 300 million sales worldwide is a phenomenal figure, especially when it is put in context as it being a year with a new iPhone released. Samsung have contributed greatly to the development and growing popularity of Android in the UK over the past 12 months. It has become a dominant platform which has led more developers to start working on it, more features and apps becoming available which has helped it grow even further. The partnership between Samsung and Google has proved to be a successful one and the Nexus is a good example of that. How this might change when the Google takeover of Motorola starts to bear fruit remains to be seen but for the time being with the Nexus Samsung finish 2011 where they started, on top.

While many consumers may think the US and UK markets might be similar, in fact for mobile phones often they could not be more different. What flies off the shelves in London, might not do the same in Los Angeles and vice versa. Apple is finding this to be true when they compare sales figures from both sides of the pond.
As stores gear up for one final push before Christmas, Apple will be heartened by the latest news that reveals their iPhone 4S remains the best-selling smartphone at the top three American mobile carriers over the last month.
A report published by Canaccord Genuity looked at sales figures for each of the main carriers, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint. In November, iPhone 4S contracts beat the Samsung Galaxy SII, which did pick up momentum and was in the number 2 slot with AT&T. At Sprint the Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch came second while at Verizon Wireless it was the Motorola Droid RAZR pushed into second place.
Author of the report Mike Walkley said it was increased distribution that made the sales figures for the iPhone 4S consistently strong in November. They also suggested the handset has performed strongly globally, making gains in other markets. Apple negotiated a staggered global launch of the device which has kept momentum going and has kept interest in the iPhone 4S at peak level. In December, the handset will launch in China, Brazil and Russia, keeping sales figures high in the run up to the close of the final quarter.
The improved sales figures in November mean the analysts are increasing their estimation of the total number of units sold up until the end of the year from 29 million to 30.5 million units.
While Apple and the iPhone 4S has gained ground, inevitably others have lost it. There have been weaker sales for both Research in Motion (RIM, the makers of BlackBerry) and HTC. Both companies cut their own forecasts for the fourth quarter of the year, a clear indication sales were not panning out as they might have hoped. Alongside the launch of the iPhone 4S, these manufacturers in the US also had to contend with the launch of SII phone deals in the states over the summer, which has developed a strong market place.
While the iPhone 4S has topped the charts in the US, in its first full month on sale in the UK is has failed to top the charts. Instead the SII has remained at the top of the Mobile Tracker chart in November, a position it has maintained for 8 months. Analysts who compiled the figures say the reason is supply is failing to keep up with demand. While the iPhone 4S is competitively priced in the UK, retailers simply do not have enough handsets and have reported a shortage of stock.
The iPhone 4S launched on 14th October in the UK, just days after the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Smartphone manufacturers have to do something to prove their edge this season. With huge competition in the market place as a host of manufacturers from Apple to Samsung, HTC and Nokia launch flagship products there is a lot of choice for people looking for new mobile phone contracts this Christmas. Motorola, who has launched its flagship handset the RAZR has opted to woo developers and modifiers by releasing the devices source code.
The RAZR has been available across the world for a fortnight. While not a surprising move, the release will enable developers to personalise the handsets and tweak its operating software to make modifications.
The Motorola RAZR has proved to be a popular and powerful device. Running Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with a 1.2 GHz dual core processor it is one of the speediest smartphones out there. It has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory with a further 32GB available through microSD cards. As an Android device the operating system may be familiar to many, but with each manufacturer the Android OS has to be modified to suit. Being able to modify the source code is a popular move for developers who like to able to tinker and create custom-made capabilities.
The news comes hot on the heels of a similar announcement by Motorola’s new owner, Google. This month they made good on their promise and released the source code for Android 4.0. Google had not released the source code for Honeycomb citing they were worried developers would port their tablet OS to their smartphone. Ice Cream Sandwich is the first Android OS to work across tablets and smartphones so Google is happy for developers to have access.
Similarly only a few days ago HTC released the source code for its Rezound, Explorer, Desire S and Amaze 4G smartphones.
The releases show a real desire for manufacturers and operators to incorporate the developer community to their latest releases. Integration, personalisation, custom-made features each go a long way to edging a smartphone out from its competitors. With the growth of Apps across Apple, Android and now Windows Phone devices, a close relationship with developers can help users get even more out of their device.
The Motorola Source Code release and that of Google for 4.0 will undoubtedly have developers excited though. As the RAZR was unveiled by Motorola the company’s senior vice president said the device would be upgrading to Android 4.0 in the New Year. Working across the source codes for the device will make for some interesting developments and modifications. As Motorola becomes part of the Google family after the software developer’s acquisition of the manufacturer, intertwined launches and source code development and modification will be high on the list for tweekers and tinkerers.

The most fiercely-contested smartphone race of the year is on, yet most punters have yet to have a flutter on the rank outsider, Nokia – until now that is.
Nokia, the former Leviathan of the mobile world: once upon a time, the Finnish mobile manufacturer had us enduring dreams about a certain little snake, and made sure our handsets were as sturdy as, well, anything we threw them against.
So what happened? When the likes of BlackBerry and Apple sprinted to the finish line, they left a trail of bewildered Nokia-lovers in their wake. ‘We are standing on a burning platform,’ said Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, bringing home the reality that something had to be done.
Fast forward almost a year, and Symbian’s gone. Instead, say hello to the first true Microsoft Windows Phone.
Yes, the Nokia Lumia 800 is attracting comment in the tech blogosphere, and for all the right reasons too. But can Nokia’s stellar reputation for handsets mingle with the needs of modern consumers? Let’s get the lowdown on the Lumia…
First off, this phone is a real beauty. It’s not made of aluminium, but a solid chunk of polycarbonate plastic: this handset is anything but cheap and tacky. In fact, the material has been combined with techniques borrowed from aluminium case design, so that all detailing has been machined, not moulded, and the results are impressive. The chassis is a single piece, so it’d take one very determined or angry man to break it. In spite of its industrial-strength properties, the design is still effortlessly stylish. The Lumia’s scuff-resistant coating extends to even hot pink and bright blue versions, while the Gorilla Glass screen is as tough as it sounds.
Like most sturdy gorillas you’ll bump into down the pub, this beast has a softer side too: its rounded edges fit snugly in the palm of your hand, making it a pleasure to hold.
Moving on from design to the specs, and it seems we’ll have to wait for a Windows Phone to disappoint. The Nokia Lumia 800 comes with a 1.4GHz single-core processor, and is backed up by 512MB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The result? Windows Phone 7.5 works like a dream. Panning and zooming operations are smooth, and apps load up promptly with ease.
Put it against other leading smartphones on the market and the Lumia struggles in just two key areas: Loading web pages is markedly slower than on the dual-core iPhone 4S. The Lumia 800’s battery isn’t up to scratch either, retaining a mere 30% of its charge after a 24-hour run. Compare this to the iPhone 4S with 40% retention, and its own Symbian predecessors with an impressive 70%, and it’s clearly lacking.
So it’s not all peaches and cream – it’s Mango in fact, which is not quite as satisfying.
It may be beautiful, and its pre-installed software slick, but we’re still waiting for that definitive moment when Nokia will come out fighting and looking to regain its heavyweight title with some excellent phone deals.
But watch this spot. The smartphone race ain’t over yet. Remember that story about the fast-paced hare and the slow but methodical tortoise? Just keep that fable in mind: Nokia’s back, and with the Lumia 800 they’ve gotten off to a quietly effective start.

After a long waiting period, iOS 5 has finally arrived! The powerful new version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system has been officially released for anyone to download through iTunes. After much time and research and testing of the betas that we experienced we definitely can say that iOS 5 has come a long way and has much to offer. So many features are now available to anyone with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. This operating system truly brings out the powerful side. Now although the operating system has over 200 features we can only list a few for now. These features are listed below.
Notifications has a brand new look and feel to it. It contains a more elegant and professional look with a pull down menu, widgets inside the notification center, quick notification so they don’t disturb you, new lock screen look, and the nice bar that is displayed at the top of the screen when a notification arrives. While notifications looks beautiful and very elegant now, some people prefer the traditional look and if one wishes to keep that classic iPhone message look all they have to do is edit notification appearance in settings.
Reminders is a brand new native application introduced to the iOS system. Reminders allows any user to easily create checklists and more with just a few taps of the finger. The checklists also can be location intelligent and display the reminder when arriving or leaving a specified location. These reminders can also be uploaded to icloud if one wishes to do so.
Newsstand is a elegant application that hosts other magazine and news paper applications inside of it for you. When a brand new issue is released it automatically downloads for you overnight so you can read the brand new issue in the morning. The application provides infinite amount of space for icons of magazine and news applications.
PC Free is a term meaning that your iOS device can now be self sufficient. If you don’t wish to have to sync with iTunes you no longer have to. You can do software updates now on your device which are also now Delta updates so that you don’t have to wait nearly as long. Instead of a 2 hour update it is now a 2 minute update.
Twitter is now being deeply integrated into the iOS structure to allow a user to share anything by simply clicking share then tweet. A user can also simply just make a basic tweet. You can share photos, videos, text, and even some app features if developers integrate twitter into their application. iOS now is more socially linked.
Perhaps one of the most important of updates to iOS is iCloud. iCloud is a service that lets you automatically sync your Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents to the cloud so you can download them on your computer or have them automatically downloaded to your iPad or iPod Touch without having to touch a single button. iCloud not only does iWork documents but also syncs photos, videos, music, purchased items, application data, and even backups of your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. iCloud also allows you to automatically sync your iCal events, contacts, and even create a personal iCloud mailing account. These are only a few of the massive amounts of features iCloud has to offer.
There are so many more features that are now in iOS 5. So go ahead and download iOS 5 and experience over the 200 brand new features it has to offer and experience your iDevice to its true potential.
iOS 5 is a powerful mobile operating system and is a definite must have. We rate it 5 stars and would recommend it to every one. Go ahead! Download iOS 5 and make your device truly powerful.
